What Are Ice Dams?

Ice dams form when a roof has snow compiled on top of it and then during the day the roof heats up and the snow partially melts. The wet snow and water moves toward the edges of the roof where it freezes at night when the temperature drops. This creates a barrier at the edge of the roof and then the melted snow causes water to seep under the shingles, causing the roof to leak. After the melting and freezing process happens several times, the ice opens up the holes and pries open the shingles in the roof. This causes more leaking and water damage to the roof, attic, and ceilings in the home.
