6 Ways to Get Your Home Ready for Winter

Winter is fast approaching here in Westchester and Fairfield Counties, which means freezing temperatures are here and getting even colder! Are you, and your home, ready for these dropping temperatures and snow? Begin preparing your home now before it’s too late. If you wait too long, it could cost you more money and could lead to water or fire damage. These six tips will help you and your home be prepared before winter begins:

1. Clean the Gutters

Many experts recommend that you clean your gutters at least twice a year, and it is even more important to clean them before winter comes. Clogged gutters cause draining issues meaning that melting snow and rain may begin to leak into your home, damage your exterior or cause ice dams to form.

2. Stock Up on Emergency Supplies

It is very important not to wait until the last minute to grab your winter supplies and equipment like snow shovels and salt for your driveway. Head to the store now to ensure you’re prepared for the next big snowstorm and it won’t leave you trapped in your home! While you’re at the store, you should make sure to pick up some firewood, water and non-perishable foods in case a big storm hits.

3. Seal Gaps to Prevent Leaks

Any air leaks on your property could cause your energy bill to rise and make your home difficult to heat throughout the winter. If you already have weather-stripping, you should inspect any area it was installed to see if it is time to replace it. You should check all windows and doors for gaps as well and use caulk to seal up any gaps you find. Don’t forget to check your attic and basement!

4. Inspect Roof and Chimney

While you’re cleaning your gutters, you should take an extra few minutes to inspect your roof and chimney areas. If you have missing, loose or damaged shingles, it could cause leaks after winter storms when the snow begins to melt. Call a handyman if you find any issues on with your roof shingles. You, or the handyman, should check the chimney’s seals and flashing to ensure those will not cause any leaks either.

5. Prepare Your Plumbing

Start by checking all of your outdoor faucets by draining out any remaining water and disconnecting any garden hoses you have outside. Consider using heat tape on your pipes if the temperature is going to get below freezing, it will keep them warm and prevent the pipes from bursting. Finally, make sure your entire home knows how to turn off your water at the source in case anything does burst.

6. Check Your Heating System

Before it gets too cold, you should have a professional come out to complete a routine inspection your heating systems. They will check to make sure everything is in perfect working order, clean and running efficiently. It is important to do this before the harsh temperatures really hit so you don’t get stuck without heat in a winter storm!
